Περίληψη
Transience, or the inevitable fact that all things, including human beings, must change and perish, is a recurring motif in both Greco-Roman epic and Japanese literature of the Heian period. Despite diverse philosophical backgrounds, there exist poignant similarities in the symbolic representation of transience in each tradition. This talk examines the literary use of trees and flowers as symbols of transience in Homer’s Iliad, Vergil’s Aeneid, Murasaki Shikibu’s The Tale of Genji, and the anonymous epic The Tale of the Heike, with the aim of revealing a shared underlying principle: a sense of mono no aware, or a bittersweet awareness of the fragility and ephemerality of all things, prompted by the sight of an ever-flowing river, the shedding of leaves in the autumn, the colour of the sala flowers, or the sound of temple bells.
