Περίληψη:

I defend an existential reading of the verb ‘to be’ and its derivatives in Rep. 479a-d, arguing that Plato indeed claims something that sounds absurd, namely that the objects of doxa occupy an intermediate ontological level between existence and non-existence. After explaining why I reject certain aspects of other existential interpretations, I show that both the narrative style and the broader context of the passage do not align with the more ‘meaningful’ predicative reading. I then examine the ontology of the so-called ‘sight-lovers’ and its implications, assuming that specific passages from the Phaedo are closely connected to Rep. 479a-d. Moreover, there are good reasons to believe that what is stated in this passage represents a painful admission for the sight-lovers rather than a position they would readily embrace. Key aspects of my interpretation include the distinction between being and appearing, an analysis of the riddle, and the crucial role that pairs of opposites play in this passage.
