*Abstract: This paper is an attempt to disentangle two related but distinct formulations of the view that human beings are sociable and political by nature: one developed by Aristotle in Politics 1 and 3 and the other by Cicero in De officiis and elsewhere. I argue that Cicero here in fact engages in a sustained critique of Aristotle’s position and that against this narrowly teleological view Cicero instead emphasises care and affection as a central reason why human beings live and work together.
Bio: Tue Søvsø (born 1986) holds a ph.d. in ancient philosophy from the Free University, Berlin and is currently postdoctoral researcher at the University of Heidelberg with a project on Cicero’s De officiis. His research focuses on ethics, psychology, and epistemology, and he has published on various topics in Hellenistic philosophy and Roman culture.
