*Abstract: This paper is an attempt to disentangle two related but distinct formulations of the view that human beings are sociable and political by nature: one developed by Aristotle in Politics 1 and 3 and the other by Cicero in De officiis and elsewhere. I argue that Cicero here in fact engages in a sustained critique of Aristotle’s position and that against this narrowly teleological view Cicero instead emphasises care and affection as a central reason why human beings live and work together.
