Το Κέντρον Ερεύνης της Ελληνικής και Λατινικής Γραμματείας της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών σας προσκαλεί στη διαδικτυακή διάλεξη της Di Wang (Yuelu Academy, Hunan University), με τίτλο Mapping Nature in Greco-Roman and Early Chinese Cartography. Η διάλεξη θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Πέμπτη 26 Ιουνίου 2025 στις 16.00.
ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
Early Chinese and Greco-Roman cartography reflect strikingly different visions of nature. Roman authors like Pliny the Elder meticulously catalogued the empire’s natural world, yet Roman maps – whether Ptolemaic or practical renderings by agrimensores and mensores aedificiorum – largely ignored it. In contrast, Chinese maps, often commissioned by the state, brim with rivers, mountains, and landscapes imbued with symbolic and administrative meaning. Nature was not a passive backdrop but an active force in governance. It was no Daoist wilderness of spontaneity, but a cornerstone of statecraft. As the Zuozhuan puts it, “The great affairs of the state lie in ritual and warfare.” In this visual language of (Confucian) order, nature was neither romanticized nor left untamed – it was surveyed, named, and mobilized for governance, particularly in the service of ritual and military purposes.
